Internships

The Aquarium offers a limited number of internships for college students each summer in the Husbandry and Education departments. The positions pay hourly wages, and interns typically work 40 hours per week for 12 to 14 weeks. The deadline to apply for summer 2008 internships is March 13.

Husbandry interns help collect, feed and care for specimens as well as clean and maintain exhibits and equipment. Education interns present daily environmental education programs for the public, plan and implement special events, work on the floor at touch pools and discovery carts, and may assist with outdoor or summer camp activities.

Feeding the turtles

Applicants must submit a cover letter and a State Application PD-107. The application also is available from any state agency. Applicants should indicate a preference for Husbandry or Education.

Applications should be dropped off at the Aquarium or mailed to the North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores, Attn.: Internships, P.O. Box 580, Atlantic Beach, N.C., 28512.

Youth Advocacy Internships

The North Carolina Youth Advocacy and Involvement Office (NCYAIO) offers internship opportunities throughout state government, including the three state Aquariums. Students should apply for these positions directly through NCYAIO.

The deadline for NCYAIO applications typically is in late January. Eligibility requirements, applications and instructions can be found at the NCYAIO website, www.ncyaio.com. For more information, call the NCYAIO office at 919-733-9296.

Students may apply for both YAIO internships and Aquarium-sponsored internships. Students must make arrangements with their schools if they are seeking academic credit.
