Programs & Events

 

 

The Aquarium offers a wide variety of free programs and activities year-round. Daily programs include marine life videos, live animal programs, audience participation games, demonstrations and more. Live animal programs in the Aquarium auditorium may feature alligators, sea turtles or snakes. Fish in selected tanks are fed daily.

Advance Registration and Fees
Most programs are free. Programs marked with an asterisk (*) require advance registration since space is limited. Programs marked with a double asterisk (**) require advance registration and fee. Pre-registration programs require a minimum number of participants and are subject to cancellation due to low enrollment or bad weather. Please be on time for your scheduled program and call us in case of cancellation so that we can make room for others. For reservation information, please call the Aquarium during normal business hours at (910) 458-8257 or toll free at 866-301-3476. Programs at the Aquarium
A variety of educational and entertaining programs are offered daily at the Aquarium. Presentations may include marine life videos, audience participation games, feeding programs, demonstrations and live animals. Plan to join us and discover more about our Aquarium and the fascinating aquatic animals and habitats. Check the calendar portion of this web site and the TV information monitors at the Aquarium
for dates and times so you don’t miss any special opportunities.

 

AQUARIST APPRENTICE
Find out what it is like to be responsible for the aquarium critters. Join staff on a behind-the-scenes tour, help prepare animal diets and then participate in some daily care and maintenance tasks. This limited opportunity is only open to 10 participants. For ages 10 and up. Ages 14 and under must be accompanied by an adult. Fee: $20.00 per participant. PRE-REGISTRATION REQUIRED.

 

BREAKFAST WITH THE FISHES
Get a sneak peek at the aquarium before it opens for the day. Coffee, juice, pastries and bagels are provided for guests. After breakfast participants are invited to feed some of our aquarium critters! Come and enjoy breakfast with your favorite aquarium resident, and stay to enjoy the rest of the morning. Fee: $15.00 (includes the admission for the day). The fee for members is $7.00 and the fee for children 2 - 5 years old is $5.00. PRE-REGISTRATION REQUIRED.

 

SHELL FRAME CRAFT
Use nature’s own creations to fashion a keepsake picture frame. Ages 14 and under must be accompanied by an adult. Fee: $8.00 per participant (does not include the admission for the day). PRE-REGISTRATION REQUIRED.

 

SHELL WREATHS
Get into the holiday spirit by making a shell wreath. Join aquarium staff to make yourholiday craft.
Fee: $8.00 (does not include the admission for the day).PRE-REGISTRATION REQUIRED.

 

GYOTAKU
Learn Gyotaku, the ancient art form of Japanese fish printing. Discover the history behind this craft, and make a Gyotaku T-shirt to take home. Ages 5 and up. Ages 14 and under must be accompanied by an adult. Fee: $8.00 (does not include the admission for the day). PRE-REGISTRATION REQUIRED. The fee for members is $7.20.

 

Programs “In the Field”

 

CANOEING THE SALT MARSH
A three- hour exploration of the Zeke’s Island Estuarine Research Reserve by canoe. Activities may include crabbing, clamming, seining or birding. Participants should be able to swim and be capable of sustained physical exertion. Ages 8 and up. Fee:$20. PRE-REGISTRATION REQUIRED.

 

SALT MARSH AND CRABBING EXPEDITION
This combination class will give participants the opportunity to view the activities of marsh-dwelling animals and the variety of plants found in this rich environment as well as participate in recreational crabbing activities while in the marsh. Ages 14 and under must be accompanied by an adult. Fee: $15.00 per participant. The fee for members is $6.30. PRE-REGISTRATION REQUIRED.

 

SALT MARSH EXPLORATION
Hike the salt marsh trail and view first hand the activities of marsh-dwelling animals and the variety of plants found in this rich environment. Ages 14 and under must be accompanied by an adult. Fee: $14.00 per participant. The fee for members is $5.40. PRE-REGISTRATION REQUIRED.

 

SURF FISHING WORKSHOP
This 3-hour workshop includes one hour of classroom discussion, then surf fishing on the beach nearby. All equipment and bait provided. Program is rain or shine, with extra activities added in event of bad weather (e.g., throwing a cast net). Ages 10 and up. Fee: $12.00 per participant. PRE-REGISTRATION REQUIRED.

Special Events

 

Aquarium Birthday Party

 

Enjoy an exciting way to celebrate your child’s special day with a birthday party at the North Carolina Aquarium at Ft. Fisher! Your child’s birthday will include a
T-shirt craft with T-shirts and all art supplies included, a live animal presentation, use of the Aquarium’s classroom, and a self guided tour of the Aquarium.

 

Themes for the live animal presentation that you can choose from include:
Amphibians – Frogs, toads, salamanders
Reptiles - Turtles, Alligators, Snakes
Invertebrates – Sea urchins, starfish, crabs

 

Cost: $205.00 for up to 12 children and 12 adults, $10.00 for each additional child, $6.00 for each additional adult.


Time Length: 2 hours
